Supporting Dementia Family Caregivers in Canadian Communities: Knowledge to Action

4 April - 12 April

by invitation

Knowledge dissemination and planning events funded by the CIHR Planning & Dissemination Grants will be held this Spring in Manitoba and Nova Scotia.  At these local meetings, key local stakeholders will be offered the opportunity to map future directions and develop specific strategies for an evidence-based caregiver intervention to be made more widely available to individuals caring for relatives living with dementia.

The intervention, Reitman Centre Working CARERS Program (RCWCP), is an integrated, multi-component group psychotherapy program designed to sustain individuals in their dual role as an employee and a caregiver.  Tailored skills-building training, problem-solving techniques, and therapeutic support are provided to a group of 4 to 6 participants.

Aimed at better meeting the unique needs of these family caregivers, CCNA Team 18 (Dementia Caregiving research) and our co-investigators completed a community-based study in 2015-2017.  Using the Participatory Action Research approach, the feasibility of adapting and delivering the RCWCP in rural Manitoba and Nova Scotia was explored. Highlighted findings will be shared and discussed at these local meetings.

Event attendance is by invitation. Invited individuals will receive more information and a registration link from local site coordinators.
