The CCNA Trainee Synapse Challenge

The CCNA Trainee Synapse Challenge (Formerly iTRIC)

Request for Application Submissions

The CCNA Training and Capacity Building Program invites all CCNA trainees to submit project proposals that demonstrate collaboration with another CCNA Team and/or the integration of a CCNA Cross-Cutting Program. Put on your creative thinking cap and become a future leader in age-related neurodegenerative disease research.

Eligibility:

  1. The Synapse Challenge is open to CCNA-affiliated trainees. Not sure if you are a CCNA trainee? You’re a CCNA trainee if you’re a graduate student (Master’s or PhD) or a postdoctoral fellow working under the supervision of a CCNA investigator and engaged in CCNA-related work. If you’re still not sure, please contact the T&CB Program Coordinator: tcb.ccna@gmail.com
  2. Previous iTRIC funding recipients can reapply although priority will be given to new applicants.
  3. One investigator/supervisor must agree to participate and ensure that the eligibility criteria are met and that the trainee applicants fulfill the Synapse Challenge deliverables. The supervisor must agree to hold the funds at their institution and assist the trainee(s) applicants with managing the funds.

Funding:

  1. We expected to fund up to 6 projects of $10,000 each through this competition.
  2. Funding ($10,000) is available for an Indigenous focused, community-engaged research project.
  3. Cross-Cutting Program funding is available for proposals that clearly integrate CCNA Cross-Cutting Programs into the design, analysis and knowledge translation components of the project. Note: This is additional project funding for research plans that incorporate a participating Cross-Cutting Program component.

More About Cross-Cutting Program Funds:

The Cross-Cutting Program funds are additional project funds targeted at applications that demonstrate the sound integration of a CCNA Cross-Cutting Program into the design, analysis, and knowledge translation components. See the award packages and criteria under each program heading below.

If you are applying for Cross-Cutting Program funds, tick the box on the application form indicating which program funds you would like to be considered for. You must also include a section in your research plan addressing the Cross-Cutting Program component.

Engagement of People with Lived Experience of Dementia (EPLED) Funds

Funds: $5000 x 2

The Engagement of People of Lived Experience of Dementia (EPLED) Program is offering bonus funds for proposals that clearly integrate people with lived experience of dementia (including people with dementia, care partners, friends and family members) into the design, analysis, or knowledge translation components of the research plan. The EPLED Program and Advisory Group welcomes trainees who wish to involve the EPLED Advisory Group members in their work, such as including an Advisory Group member in the research proposal, consulting the Advisory Group when planning methods or interpreting results, or co-presenting/disseminating findings with the Advisory Group. Trainees are encouraged to consult with the EPLED Program prior to the Synapse Challenge review-panel presentation and to articulate plans for engaging the EPLED Advisory Group as part of their research plans. Please note: to be considered for these funds, teams must include people with lived experience of dementia in their research, however, working directly with the EPLED Advisory Group is not a requirement for these funds; other methods and approaches to engagement are also encouraged. For more information about EPLED, please visit: www.epled.ca.

Women, Sex, Gender, and Dementia (WSGD) Funds

Funds: $5000 x 2

The Women, Sex, Gender, and Dementia Program is offering awards for proposals that clearly integrate sex and/or gender in the project design, data analysis, and knowledge translation components of the research plan. Funded recipients will be invited to present their work at the Women, Sex, Gender and Dementia Champion meeting and to attend the bi-monthly Champion meeting for ongoing feedback on their research plan.

Knowledge Translation and Exchange (KTE) Funds

Funds: $5000 x 2

The funds will include costs of producing knowledge products (the funds can cover things like graphic design, video editing and translation). The funds include close guidance from the KTE team in planning and executing the KTE activities of the project.

The Knowledge Translation and Exchange Cross-Cutting Program is offering these bonus funds for proposals that clearly consider the perspective and knowledge needs of target knowledge users in their project plan and are committed to carrying out the development of relevant KTE activities. Citing relevant KTE scientific literature and descriptions of well-justified KTE strategies will be considered an advantage.

Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Funds

Funds:  $5000.

The Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Program is offering bonus funds for proposals that clearly consider, measure and or evaluate ethical, legal and social implications of the project in the project design, data analysis and/or knowledge translation components of the research plan.
